Zermatt vs St. Moritz: which Swiss icon is yours?
The car-free village beneath the Matterhorn or the glamour of the Engadin: a considered comparison to help you choose the Swiss resort for your chalet stay.
In brief
Speak to Nathalie or AdamChoosing between Zermatt and St. Moritz is a pleasant dilemma. Both are Swiss through and through, both have welcomed discerning travellers for generations, and both offer chalets of real quality. The Zermatt vs St. Moritz question is less about which is better and more about which kind of winter you are hoping for.
Zermatt is a car-free village in the Valais, built around the view of the Matterhorn. St. Moritz sits in the Engadin, in Graubünden, and pairs its skiing on Corviglia with a winter social life that reaches well beyond the slopes. The two resorts lie in quite different corners of the country, and they feel it.
We have chalets in both. Our team has visited each one, and this guide draws on that knowledge to help you decide where to spend your winter.
Mountain village or alpine social capital
Zermatt’s car-free streets give it a calm, almost timeless feel. Guests arrive by train, electric taxis move quietly through the village, and the Matterhorn appears at the end of many a lane. Evenings are about good food and the pleasure of walking home through the snow. Chalet Anelle, in the heart of the village, is a short stroll from restaurants, bars and boutiques.
St. Moritz has a more cosmopolitan rhythm. Its winter season is famous for events on the frozen lake, elegant evenings and a sense of occasion that draws visitors who may not ski at all. Chalet Azelia enjoys an elevated position in the heart of St. Moritz, a short walk from boutiques and restaurants, with views of the Engadin Valley.
- Zermatt: car-free, intimate, dominated by the Matterhorn
- St. Moritz: cosmopolitan, social, rich in winter events
- Both: excellent dining and a strong sense of place
How the skiing compares
Zermatt is known for high-altitude skiing, long runs and a ski area that crosses into Italy, which makes it a favourite with keen skiers who want variety and snow at altitude. The scenery, with the Matterhorn constantly in view, is part of the experience.
St. Moritz’s main ski area, Corviglia, offers wide, sunny slopes that suit a relaxed day on the mountain, and the wider Engadin offers further skiing and a long tradition of other winter sports. Mixed groups often find it easy going, while experts look to the surrounding mountains for more challenge.
Getting there and settling in
Geneva and Zurich airports both serve the Swiss resorts. Because Zermatt is car-free, the last part of the journey is by train, or by helicopter transfer for those who prefer it. St. Moritz is reached by road or rail through the mountains, and private aviation offers a quicker route for those who want it. Chauffeurs, transfers and private jets are arranged on request.
In St. Moritz, our collection includes Chalet Avalon, overlooking the Engadin Valley five minutes by car from the centre with a private chauffeur daily, and Chalet Gus, a restored 18th-century alpine residence. In Zermatt, the collection is intimate: Chalet Anelle and Chalet Zeyr, the latter with spectacular mountain views from the heart of the village.
Whichever resort you choose, breakfast arrives each morning and a private concierge is part of the stay, so the practical side is looked after from the moment you step inside. Private chefs, spa treatments and childcare are available on request in Zermatt and St. Moritz alike.

Ask our teamIs Zermatt or St. Moritz better for serious skiers?
Zermatt is often preferred by keen skiers for its high-altitude terrain, long runs and links into Italy. St. Moritz offers excellent skiing too, but many visitors value it as much for its social life and other winter pursuits.
Which resort is better for non-skiers?
St. Moritz has a particularly rich programme for non-skiers, from events on the frozen lake to shopping, dining and wellness. Zermatt’s car-free village is a delight to explore on foot, though life there revolves more closely around the mountain.
How do we reach a chalet in car-free Zermatt?
The final part of the journey is by train, with electric taxis in the village. At Chalet Anelle, an electric taxi meets guests at the station. Helicopter transfers can also be arranged on request.
Can we have a private chauffeur in St. Moritz?
Chalet Avalon and Chalet Azelia both list a private chauffeur among their features, and at Avalon the chauffeur is there daily. For other chalets, chauffeurs and transfers can be arranged on request.
Which resort suits a family?
Both can work beautifully. Zermatt’s car-free streets are reassuring with children, while the sunny Corviglia slopes in St. Moritz are welcoming for mixed abilities. Childcare can be arranged on request in either resort.
