In brief

Speak to Nathalie or Adam

Courchevel vs Verbier is a question we hear often, usually from people who have skied one and are curious about the other, or from groups who cannot agree. Both are among the most sought-after names in Alpine skiing, both have exceptional chalets, and both attract a demanding international clientele. Yet they feel very different once you are there.

This guide sets out those differences as we see them, from the character of each village to the way you arrive and the type of chalet you can expect. It is general by design: the right answer depends on who is skiing, what the evenings should feel like and which week you have in mind.

We have chalets in both resorts in our collection, each visited by our team, so we have no reason to favour one over the other. Our aim is simply to help you choose well.

Character

Two resorts, two temperaments

Courchevel, in the French Alps, is part of Les 3 Vallées, one of the largest linked ski areas in the world. The resort is spread across several villages at different altitudes, with Courchevel 1850 at the top of the social scale and quieter levels such as Courchevel 1650 Moriond and Courchevel Village below. It is known for polished service, refined dining and beautifully groomed pistes.

Verbier, in the Swiss canton of Valais, sits at the heart of the 4 Vallées. It has a reputation for challenging terrain and off-piste skiing, and its village has a livelier, more spontaneous energy in the evenings. Chalets tend to be set on the slopes around the bowl of the resort, many with sweeping views.

  • Courchevel: Les 3 Vallées, several villages, polished and gastronomic
  • Verbier: the 4 Vallées, steeper terrain, a lively village atmosphere
  • Both: a wide choice of chalets with spa and wellness facilities
Skiing and arrival

On the mountain and getting there

For mixed groups with beginners and intermediates, Courchevel’s broad network of well-kept runs makes it an easy choice, and expert skiers will still find plenty of steep ground across the three valleys. For confident skiers who measure a holiday by fresh tracks, Verbier tends to win: its high terrain and off-piste culture are the reason many people go.

Access differs too. Courchevel has an altiport, which means helicopter transfers and smaller aircraft can bring you close to the chalet, alongside the road journey from the airports serving the French Alps. Verbier is usually reached by road from Geneva airport, and a helicopter transfer can shorten the journey. Chauffeurs, transfers and private aviation are all arranged on request whichever you choose.

The chalets

What each resort offers in our collection

In Courchevel, the collection ranges from Chalet Erise, a ski-in/ski-out retreat in Courchevel 1850, and Chalet Valmont in the Cospillot quarter at the heart of 1850, to Chalet Sally on the hillside of Les Brigues in Courchevel Village, with wide views across the valley. Proximity to the pistes is a strong point here, and several chalets are within easy reach of the snow.

In Verbier, estates are a speciality. Chalet Astral is a private estate of two houses in Les Esserts, where skiers can glide into the ski area, and Chalet Auron sits above a small mountain lake in the Hameau area. Chalet Ambre occupies a private enclave above the village, with a chauffeur on hand to bridge the few minutes by car to the lifts.

Wherever you stay, breakfast is served daily and a private concierge is included.

I

No preference to protect

We place guests in both resorts, so our advice is about fit rather than availability on our side. If Verbier suits you better, we will say so, and the same is true of Courchevel.

II

Chalets seen with our own eyes

Every chalet we suggest in either resort has been visited by our team. That lets us compare position, views and facilities across the two with real confidence.

III

Help with the journey

The arrival is one of the biggest differences between the two resorts. We arrange chauffeurs, helicopter transfers and private aviation on request so the journey fits your plans.

IV

Options beyond the website

Our collection extends to residences that are not shown online. When the published choice in one resort is limited for your dates, they can tip the balance.

Questions

Good to know

Anything else? Our team in Paris answers personally, usually within the day.

Ask our team
Is Courchevel or Verbier better for beginners?

Courchevel is generally considered the easier resort for beginners and mixed-ability groups, thanks to its extensive network of groomed runs. Verbier can certainly work for beginners, but its reputation rests on more demanding terrain.

Which resort is better for off-piste skiing?

Verbier is widely known for its off-piste skiing and is often the first choice for expert skiers. Courchevel also has excellent off-piste opportunities across Les 3 Vallées. In either resort, skiing off-piste with a qualified mountain guide is strongly advised.

How do we get to each resort?

Courchevel can be reached by road or, via its altiport, by helicopter or small aircraft. Verbier is generally reached by road from Geneva, with helicopter transfers as an alternative. We arrange chauffeurs, transfers and private aviation on request for both.

Which resort has the livelier evenings?

Verbier is known for its spirited après-ski and village nightlife. Courchevel 1850 offers a more polished evening scene centred on fine dining, while the lower villages are quieter. Your concierge can make restaurant reservations in either.

Can you help us decide if we are still unsure?

Gladly. Tell us who is skiing, at what level, and the week you have in mind, and we will give you an honest recommendation with chalets to match in a tailored proposal.
