In brief

Speak to Nathalie or Adam

There is no single best time to rent a chalet in Courchevel, but there is almost always a best time for you. The winter here changes character as it goes, from the glitter of the festive weeks to the calm of January and the sunlit afternoons of March. Knowing how each period tends to feel makes it far easier to choose your dates.

Courchevel is part of Les 3 Vallées, and its villages, from Courchevel 1850 to Courchevel 1650 Moriond and Courchevel Village, share the same broad rhythm through the season. This guide is general by nature: snow and weather vary from one winter to the next, and the exact opening and closing dates are set by the resort each year.

What follows is how we describe the season to guests who are weighing up their options, drawing on many winters of arranging chalet stays.

Early season

December and the festive weeks

The season usually opens in December. The weeks before Christmas are often among the quietest of the winter, a rewarding time for those who want empty pistes and are happy to accept that early snow can be variable.

From Christmas to New Year, Courchevel is at its most festive and most in demand. Chalets for these weeks are often requested well in advance, and the period brings its own rhythm of family dinners, celebrations and New Year’s Eve parties. If you are planning for the festive season, it is wise to begin the conversation early.

January, once the New Year guests have left, brings a calmer mood. The days are shorter and colder, but the slopes are quieter, which many experienced skiers value above all else.

High season

February, the school holiday weeks

February is shaped by school holidays across Europe, which fall in different weeks from one country to the next. The resort is lively, ski schools are busy and the most popular chalets are spoken for early. For families, these weeks are often unavoidable, so the key is to plan ahead and choose a chalet that makes the busy days easier: close to the slopes, with space to unwind in the evening.

Chalet Erise, a ski-in/ski-out retreat in Courchevel 1850, and Chalet Flys, about 100 metres from the pistes in Courchevel Village, are good examples of homes that take the strain out of a crowded week.

Spring

March and April, sunshine on the snow

March is, for many guests, the sweet spot of the Courchevel season. The days are longer, the light is warmer and lunch on a sunny terrace becomes part of the routine. Snow cover at altitude is usually well established by then, and the resort is calmer outside any school holiday weeks.

April brings the end of the season, with spring snow that softens through the day and a relaxed, almost celebratory atmosphere on the mountain. Easter falls in March or April depending on the year, and it can bring a brief return of families. Later in the month, the resort winds down until the season closes.

  • December: early snow, quiet weeks, then the festive peak
  • January: calmer slopes and crisp, cold days
  • February: school holidays and a lively resort
  • March: longer days and sunshine
  • April: spring snow and the close of the season

Questions

Good to know

Ask our team
When is the quietest time to stay in Courchevel?

The early December weeks before Christmas and much of January, once the New Year guests have left, tend to be the calmest. Late March and April, outside school holidays, can also be quiet. Conditions vary from year to year, so we are happy to advise on specific dates.

When should we start planning for Christmas or New Year?

As early as you can. The festive weeks are the most requested of the Courchevel season, and the widest choice of chalets is open to those who plan ahead. Even if your dates are close, ask us, as some residences are not published online.

Is March a good month for a ski holiday in Courchevel?

Many guests consider March ideal, with longer days, sunshine and generally well-established snow at altitude. It is especially pleasant for those who enjoy long lunches on the mountain as much as the skiing itself.

Which village of Courchevel should we choose?

Courchevel 1850 is the most central and lively, Courchevel 1650 Moriond is quieter yet a short drive from 1850, and Courchevel Village has a residential feel. The best choice depends on your group and the time of year, which we can talk through with you.

Can we arrive by helicopter?

Yes. Courchevel has an altiport, and helicopter transfers can be arranged on request, alongside chauffeurs and transfers by road. Arriving this way can be particularly welcome on busy weekends in high season.
